Typeface Design:

oxymoron

Oxymoron is a typeface that I designed in the Lettering & Font Design class at the University of Louisville Hite Institute of Art & Design with direction from Steve Skaggs.

The challenge in designing any typeface is to create something that fulfills a personal desire, solves a puzzle, or fills a gap in the existing wheelhouse. In designing Oxymoron, I hoped to address all three challenges. First, by bringing into fruition a vision that arose in my mind; second, solving the puzzle of combining such contrasting elements in a successful way; and third, creating something that I hadn’t seen before. This typeface highlights contrasting characteristics such as the stroke variation and the distinction of line weight in order to create an ironic, playful tonality.
